Staff have committed to the Community Redevelopment Board that efforts will be made to secure funding for the purpose of creating a strategic community and neighborhood plan for the US-1 corridor south of the Roosevelt Bridge.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) anticipates that the Florida Legislature will appropriate funding for Community Planning Technical Assistance (CPTA) Grants for state fiscal year 2020-2021.
The CPTA Grants provide the opportunity to create innovative plans and development strategies to promote a diverse economy and meet the requirements of the Community Planning Act.
Any grant request for funding will need to be submitted to DEO on or before end of Friday, June 5, 2020. Submitting a request for funding does not guarantee that funding will be provided. DEO will consider grant requests received by the above date and time before the grant requests received after the above date and time.
The City's grant application will focus on the planning and economic development of the US-1 corridor as it passes through the Community Redevelopment Area south of the Roosevelt Bridge. This section of US-1 is particularly important as it fulfills a number of economic and community planning needs within the City.
- Main transportation thoroughfare within the CRA.
- Diverse backbone of economic, employment and business activity.
- Buffer for the neighborhoods both east and west.
The economic and business functions of this corridor are under threat due to the impact of a changing retail market and COVID-19 constraints on business and community activity. A strategic community plan will assist in the continuation of the corridor as a main transportation link while at the same time protecting the local economy and neighborhood buffer function.
The grant application will seek to secure funding for a strategic land use and economic development plan. The strategy will identify and recommend potential amendments to the community redevelopment area plan and to the land development code.
