The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will be presenting the SR 5 / US-1 at SW Joan Jefferson Way Planning Study. An overflow on the southbound left turn lane onto Joan Jefferson Way creates potential safety and operational issues on the Roosevelt Bridge, which was first identified by FDOT in the US 1 Multimodal Corridor Study completed in April 2015. The purpose of the SW Joan Jefferson Way planning study is to analyze existing traffic volumes and patterns, as well as, consider various build alternatives for the intersection. Four alternatives have been developed for consideration and the pros and cons of each will be presented.
The Martin County Metropolitan Planning Organization's (MPO) Board unanimously approved Build Alternative #1 on September 17, 2018. Build Alternative #1 consists of extending the US 1 southbound left turn lanes to Joan Jefferson Way and Ocean Boulevard, traffic signal phasing changes, and installation of flashing beacons and detection cameras along Joan Jefferson Way.
